Iron Age Terracotta Zoomorphic Sculpture - PF.3611

The body of the figure is essentially a rectangular block with broad, curved indentations to delineate legs and a “saddle-like” effect on the back. From a high “collar,” the head extends in a solid form ending in a flattened snout, where a single incised line is drawn across the center to indicate a mouth. Bulging eyes are set within diamond shaped, nestled between a simple sloping ridge of the nose. The entire animal is decorated in punched holes or circles covering the entire body, with the exception of the back area. A stubby tail completes the zoomorphic appearance, which is like many animals in one, but unlike any that are known-- except in the imagination. - (PF.3611) |
