Djenne Bronze Anthropomorphic Sculpture - PF.5145 *CLICK ANY IMAGE TO ENLARGE* Strong stocky legs, bent at the knees with the back arched, and large flat feet support the weight of the very long curved head. The figure, who may be a hunter, holds a large curved sword incised with cross-hatching, while carrying a wine skin or flask in his left hand. Over his left shoulder and strapped onto his back is what appears to be a quiver. His elongated face has a plate-like lip, appliqued elliptical eyes and well-formed ears. Around his upper arms and wrists are thick bracelets. These details may indicate the representation of an important hunter/warrior wearing a ritual mask related to hunting. By using opposing curves and arches for balance, the figure achieves the proportions of a true sculpture. - (PF.5145) |
